The Icon of Virgin Mary Gerontissa holds a significant place in the religious life of Pantokrator Monastery, known for its miraculous history and deep spiritual significance.

Historical Origin

Gifted by Emperor Alexios I Komnenos, the icon has been part of the monastery since its early days.

The First Miracle

The icon mysteriously relocated construction materials to where the monastery now stands, signifying the Virgin Mary's will for its location.

Divine Intervention

The icon played a unique role in fulfilling the dying wish of an elderly monk for receiving communion before his death.

Liturgical Significance

In 1948, Elder Gerasimos Mikragiannanitis composed a liturgical sequence for December 2nd, and in 1976, a canon to be sung every Monday.

Artistic Details

The icon portrays the Virgin Mary in full stature with her body turned to the left. It is aligned with the iconography of Virgin Mary Agiosoritissa or Maria Advocata. Originally placed behind the altar, it is now located at the northeastern column of the main church, protected by a mid-19th-century Russian silver cover.
