The Icon of Virgin Mary Phovera Prostasia (Great Protection) from Koutloumousiou Monastery
Situated in a chapel to the left of the narthex in Koutloumousiou Monastery, this miraculous icon is known as the "Great Protection".

Historical Context
The icon gained its name "Great Protection" after shielding the monastery from imminent great dangers, including a pirate raid where the monastery became invisible through divine intervention.
Iconography
The Virgin Mary is portrayed holding the Divine Infant, both elegantly clothed in intricately embroidered garments. An angel to the left holds the symbols of the Lord's Passion.
Significance and Influence
The icon's artistic and religious importance lies in its unique representation, with just one angel holding all the symbols of Christ's Passion. It became particularly popular in the 16th and 17th centuries, especially in regions influenced by the Cretan school of iconography.
