Origin of the Icon

The Holy Icon of Virgin Mary Of The Akathist (Of The Salutations) from Hilandar Monastery on Mount Athos

Also known as Gorgoepikoos (She Who Is Quick to Listen), the icon was a gift to the monastery from the spouse of the ruler of Wallachia, Mattheus Bassarab, in 1643.

Icon Location

The icon is situated in the main church of Hilandar Monastery, on the right side of the iconostasis, next to the southern entrance.

History of the Icon

In 1837, due to the negligence of a clergyman, the iconostasis caught fire. The lower part of the icon was damaged. During the fire, the Akathist hymn was sung before the icon, which led to its name "Of the Akathist".

The Akathist Icon from Hilandar Monastery dates back to the late 16th to early 17th century.
