Origin and Placement

Located in the proskinitarion at the northeast column of Hilandar Monastery's main church, the icon known as "Papadiki" or "Of the Priest" holds a unique place in Orthodox Christian devotion.

The icon is so named because it is traditionally carried by priests during religious processions. Another interpretation suggests that it was named after a miracle involving a priest.

Iconography

The front side of the icon portrays the Virgin Mary in the established Hodegetria iconographic style, holding the Infant Christ in her left arm. Christ, in turn, blesses the faithful with his right hand and holds a closed scroll in his left.

The Legend

According to lore, a heretical priest holding the icon during a procession fell into the sea and drowned, revealing his unrighteous deeds to the devout monks around him.

Historical Significance

Though its front side was covered with later-period imagery, the icon's reverse side suggests a date from 1360-1370, making it a significant historical artifact.
