Icon of Virgin Mary Pantanassa (Queen of All) from Xenophontos Monastery

The miraculous Icon of the Virgin Mary Pantanassa graces the intricate marble iconostasis of the new main church of the Xenophontos Monastery.
The Legend Behind the Incomplete Artistry
The elder artist behind the icon passed away before completing the portrayal of Virgin Mary and Christ. Despite his intent, the elder's apprentice couldn't finish the job, as miraculously, the Virgin prevented the brush from touching her face. Thus, the icon remains unfinished to this day, reminding everyone of this wondrous event.
Iconographic Depiction
Virgin Mary Pantanassa is depicted in a modified Hodegetria iconography style. The metal cover (riza) of the icon is from the 19th century, leaving the faces, hands, and Christ’s feet uncovered. The color of the faces on the icon strikingly contrasts with the rest of the imagery. An enamelled coat of arms with the inscription "Pantanassa" is positioned over Mary's right shoulder. Based on its distinctive stylistic features, notably in the faces of Virgin Mary and Christ, the icon is dated to the 19th century.
