The fresco of the Virgin Mary Antiphonitria is located in a niche on the northern wall, connecting the chapel of Saint Demetrius and the main church of Vatopedi Monastery.

The Miraculous Event

The icon earned its name after prophesying a decree to Galla Placidia, who was journeying to Constantinople to visit her brother Arcadius. As she entered the main church, a voice emanated from the small gate, prohibiting her from proceeding further.

The Affirmation of Avaton

This miraculous event affirmed and strengthened the sacred rule of Avaton on Mount Athos, restricting the entrance of women.

Archaeological Discoveries

Recent archaeological findings have unveiled a large early Christian basilica beneath the main church, supporting the claims of the long-held tradition.
